Chalkboard Pots

Personalize your spring planters with black or custom-colored chalkboard paint.

What better way to usher in the month of March than by hosting an Unwind & Design party for friends and preparing pots for spring plantings. Chalkboard paint makes a remarkable canvas that allows you to label pots with the names of your favorite plants and seeds. We even show you how to create your own chalkboard paint in various colors. Let this project help you and your friends venture into the garden and relish in the rising temperatures.

Good to Know

If you make chalkboard paint with tile grout, you can mix in drops of black chalkboard paint to create darker shades that will add detail and dimension.

Step-by-Step
  1. Click here to download and print the design templates for the labels. Next, cut out the design of your choice. Temporarily attach it to the pot using tape. Trace the pattern with a pencil, and then remove it.
  2. To make custom-colored chalkboard paint, pour 1 cup of satin latex paint into a container. Then add 2 tablespoons of white unsanded tile grout. Using a paint stick, mix thoroughly. If the mixture becomes too thick to brush on, add a tablespoon of water, and mix again.
  3. Brush on black or custom-colored chalkboard paint within the traced lines. Apply a second coat if needed, allowing each coat to dry.
  4. Label the pots using chalk.
