What a Great Idea! :: Picnic Pretty

Surprise a happy couple with this dressed-up basket, or make one for yourself.

Picnic Pretty

Step 1:
Determine the length and width of the top of the basket (#211164) from the outside edges. Cut a piece of 1/4-inch plywood to fit. (A Lowe's employee can cut the board for you.) Sand any rough edges.

Step 2:
Measure and mark 3 1/2 inches in from each short edge of the board and 1/2 inch in from each long edge. Drill a 1/4-inch-diameter hole at each of these two marks.

Step 3:
Stain the board as desired, and allow to dry. Apply a coat of clear gloss polyurethane, and allow to dry.

Step 4:
Remove the cloth liner, and pull out the drawstring. Cut 1 inch off each end of the drawstring, and then cut the string in half. Reinsert the cloth liner with the drawstring hole at the back of the basket. If you wish to hide the hole, turn under the liner hem, and secure with white all-purpose glue.

Step 5:
At the back of the basket, measure 1 inch below the rim 3 1/2 inches from each side. Mark these two points on the liner, both inside and outside the basket. Use utility scissors to cut a 1/2-inch-long slit at each of the four marks. Prevent fraying with a dab of white all-purpose glue, and allow to dry.

Step 6:
Insert a drawstring piece into each outside slit, through the basket, and then through the inside slit. Place the wooden lid on top of the basket, and secure it by pulling the drawstrings through the drilled holes. Tie in a bow to secure.
