Leaf Composting Corral

Done in a Day
General Instructions

Fill all holes and voids with wood filler. Countersink all screws. Wipe away excess glue with a damp cloth.

Step-by-Step
  1. Square Bin
    • Cut four pieces of vinyl fencing to measure 2 feet square. Join the four pieces with cable ties to form an open-ended cube (wear gloves for protection).
    • Cut a length of wooden fencing to measure slightly longer than 8 feet, and wrap it around the cube, starting at a corner and aligning the lower edges. Crimp the wire on the wooden fencing with pliers at each corner to fit the cube.
    • Fasten the wooden fencing to the cube using cable ties. Cut off any excess pickets.
    • Secure the finished bin to the ground with stakes.
  2. Round Bin
    • Cut a 6-foot-long piece of economy wire (wear gloves for protection). Overlap the ends by two rows, and then use pliers to bend the cut wires back on themselves to form a round cylinder.
    • Cut a length of wooden fencing to measure slightly longer than 6 feet. Wrap the wooden fencing around the cylinder, aligning the lower edges.
    • Use cable ties to secure the wooden fencing to the cylinder. Trim off any excess pickets.
    • Secure the finished bin to the ground with stakes.
Good To Know

Leaf composting works best when the pile remains moist and aerated. Turn the leaves once a month in warmer weather (less often in cooler conditions).
