Build an All-Purpose Shelf

Build this simple cottage-style shelf for a casual storage solution.

Laundry Shelf
General Instructions

Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List as a guide and adjusting for fit. Attach all parts using wood glue and 1 5/8-inch screws countersunk with a #10 countersink bit. Print the provided template on two sheets of paper. Tape the sheets together along the dotted lines, and trace the pattern on the sides of the shelf.

Step-by-Step
  1. Round over three sides of the top using a router fitted with a 1/4-inch roundover bit. Turn the top over, and use a beading bit to rout the same three sides.
  2. Cut the sides using the provided template, and round over the front edges with a 1/4-inch roundover bit.
  3. Attach the sides to the top, placing them 1 1/4 inches in from each end and flush with the back edge of the top.
  4. Attach the large back to the top and sides, making sure it is flush with the back edges of the top and sides.
  5. Attach the small back to the sides, butting it against the large back.
  6. Round over the front edge of the shelf with a 1/4-inch roundover bit. Turn the shelf over, and use a beading bit to rout the same edge.
  7. Attach the shelf to the large back and sides; the bottom of the shelf should be aligned with the bottom of the large back.
  8. Fill all holes with stainable wood filler. Sand, prime, and paint. Allow to dry. Hang on the wall using appropriate hangers for your wall type.
