Moulding Ledge

A simple shelf for frames personalizes the room. Here’s how to make your own.

Moulding Ledge

Step 1: Determine the desired height for the ledge, and lightly mark a line on the wall. Locate and mark the wall studs on the line.

Step 2: Using 2-inch screws, attach the nailing strip (1 x 2 board) to the wall at the stud locations, with the 1 1/2-inch side against the wall.

Step 3: Attach the ledge (1 x 3 board) to the nailing strip with glue and 4d nails, so that the 3/4-inch side is flush against the wall.

Step 4: Attach the stop moulding to the face of the ledge with glue and brads; the bottom of the moulding should be flush with the bottom of the ledge face.

Step 5: Attach cove moulding with glue and brads to the corner where the nailing strip and ledge meet.

Step 6: Fill all holes, and sand smooth. Prime, paint, and let dry.
