Folk-Art Flag

Celebrate Independence Day, or any other day, with this easy project made of moulding.

Folk-Art Flag
Step-by-Step
  1. Cut the base cap, mullion, and stop moulding into several pieces, all roughly the same length (we used 11 pieces). (Cutting them at slightly different angles and lengths will create the folk-art look).
  2. Line up the pieces to create the rectangular shape of a flag. (Mix the different moulding types to get your desired look.) Run strips of tape vertically down the set to hold the pieces together.
  3. From the S4S moulding, cut two pieces measuring slightly shorter than the height of your flag. (These will serve as braces that secure the strips together.) Lay these pieces about 1 foot apart on newspaper or a drop cloth.
  4. Apply wood glue to the tops of the S4S moulding pieces. Carefully pick up the flag assembly, and lay it on top of the S4S strips; the S4S strips should be running perpendicular to the flag strips. Allow the glue to set for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Spray-paint the front of the flag white, and allow to dry. Then, cover the entire area that will be blue in tape, and tape off the remaining flag for the stripes. Spray-paint red, and allow to dry. Remove all of the tape.
  6. Mark off the portion that will be blue with tape, and cover the rest of the flag with newspaper or a drop cloth. Using a marker, draw several stars onto your roll of tape, and then cut them out and affix them in your desired design to the exposed section of the flag. Spray-paint blue, and allow to dry. Remove all tape and coverings, and, if desired, lightly sand small areas to create an aged look.
  7. Attach the picture hanging hooks and wire to the two back braces.
