Artist’s Studio Table

Create your own version of this table constructed from a door and pre-made wooden legs.

Artist’s Studio Table
Step-by-Step
  1. Lay out the legs and skirts.
    • Determine the desired height of your table. Standard desk height is approximately 29 inches.
    • Subtract the door's thickness from the desired height, and cut the four legs to this length.
    • Lay the door on a flat surface. Position a leg upside down on the door 2 inches from each corner, and trace its perimeter.
    • Measure the distances between the marked leg placements on all four sides, and cut the skirts to these lengths.
  2. Assemble the legs, skirts, and corner braces (see Figure A).
    • Center the skirts on the legs, and attach the skirts to the legs using pocket hole screws.
    • Mark 1 inch from each inside intersection of the leg and skirt. Position a 2 x 4 underneath the leg/skirt assembly at the 1-inch marks, and mark these angles onto the 2 x 4. Cut along the scribed lines with a miter saw. Repeat to create a corner brace for each corner.
    • Holding each corner brace in place, drill a 3/8-inch pilot hole through the center of the 3 1/2-inch side aligned with the nearest point of the leg.
    • Attach a corner brace to each leg using a lag bolt and washer.
  3. Attach the top.
    • Center the leg/skirt assembly on the door, and mark its position. Set the leg/skirt assembly upright.
    • Align the marks on the door with the leg/skirt assembly, and attach using glue and 8d finishing nails.
  4. Set the Bolt-downs.
    • Fill any gaps and seams with caulk. Sand smooth when dry.
    • Prime the entire desk, and apply two coats of paint. Allow each coat to dry.
    • Place the desk accents on the skirts as desired.
