Designed with an in-stock base cabinet, a custom shelving unit, and a budget-friendly concrete countertop, this hospitality center with a slightly modern feel has a place for everything, from glassware to bottles. The real splurge for this homeowner was the wine cellar. “I love that it regulates two temperatures at once,” she says. “Now I can easily accommodate all my guests’ favorite drinks, whatever the occasion.”

Stemware holders Follow our step-by-step instructions to build your own customized beverage bar. And for how-to instructions on creating a concrete countertop, click here.

Primed and painted black, the stemware holders blend in with the shelving.

Instructions: General

Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List as a guide and adjusting for fit. Note: These instructions and Cut List are for a wine cellar that requires a 24-inch-wide opening per the manufacturer. You’ll need to adjust the width of the beverage bar if you select a different unit.

  1. Build the base assembly.
    • Cut a hole in the (01) back large enough for the wine cellar power chord to pass through.
    • Using glue and 1-inch wire brads, attach the (01) back to the base cabinet, making sure that the top edges and the left sides are flush.
    • Temporarily align the (02) end panel with the base cabinet with the back edges flush. Scribe the outline of the cabinet’s toe kick onto the (02) end panel. Transfer the vertical line 3/4 inch toward the back edge of the (02) end panel. Cut out the notch in the (02) end panel as shown in Figure 1.
    • Using glue and 1-inch wire brads, attach the (02) end panel to the (01) back, making sure that the edges are flush as shown in Figure 1.
    • Attach the (03) long nosing to the (02) end panel using glue and 6d finishing nails. For the vertical face of the toe kick, attach the (04) short nosing to the (02) end panel using glue and 6d finishing nails (refer to Figure 1). Note: Be sure that you have the proper clearance between the cabinet and the inside edges of the nosing parts.
    • Check the cabinet assembly for square.
    • Attach the (05) top to the base cabinet, to the (02) end panel, and to the (03) long nosing using glue and 1-inch wire brads.
    • If desired, add shoe moulding around the bottom edges of the assembly.
  2. Build the top shelving unit.
    • Using glue and 1 5/8-inch screws, attach the (06) top shelf and the (07) bottom to the (08) sides as shown in Figure 2.
    • Lay the assembly on its back, and position the (09) center shelf 16 7/8 inches from the bottom face of the (06) top shelf. Attach the (09) center shelf to the (08) sides using glue and 1 5/8-inch screws.
    • Position the lower (10) center divider 16 7/8 inches from the inside face of the (08) sides as shown in Figure 3. Using glue and pocket hole screws, attach the lower (10) center divider to the (07) bottom and to the (09) center shelf.
    • Repeat Step 2c for the upper (10) center divider, and attach it to the (09) center shelf and to the (06) top shelf using glue and pocket hole screws as shown in Figure 3.
  3. Add the small shelf and small dividers.
    • Position the (11) small shelf in the top right quadrant of the assembly and 8 1/16 inches from the inside face of the (06) top shelf. Attach the (11) small shelf to the upper (10) center divider and to the right (08) side using glue and 1 5/8-inch screws (see Figure 4).
    • Position one (12) small divider in the bottom left quadrant of the assembly and 5 1/8 inches from the lower (10) center divider. Attach the (12) small divider to the (07) bottom and to the (09) center shelf using glue and 1 5/8-inch screws.
    • Position the remaining (12) small divider 5 1/8 inches from the left (08) side, and attach it to the (07) bottom and to the (09) center shelf using glue and 1 5/8-inch screws (see Figure 5).
  4. Attach crown and screen moulding.
    • Scribe to fit and attach (13) crown moulding to the top of the assembly on the front and the sides using glue and 4d finishing nails (see Figure 6).
    • Scribe to fit and attach (14) screen moulding to the front edges of the assembly using glue and 3/4-inch wire brads (see Figure 6).
  5. Finish as desired.
    • Fill all holes, sand, prime, and paint the two assemblies.
    • Secure a countertop on top of the base assembly. Place the top shelving unit on the countertop.
