Board-and-Batten Shutters

STEP-BY-STEP

General: These instructions are for a pair of 15- x 54 3/4-inch shutters. You’ll need to adjust the lumber materials according to your desired shutter dimensions. The shutters shown here overhang the top and bottom of the window trim by 1 1/2 inches.

1 Cut four pieces measuring 54 3/4 inches in length from the 1 x 8 boards, and sand rough edges.

2 Place two of the 1 x 8 pieces on a flat work surface with the top and bottom edges flush and with a 1/2-inch gap between them.

3 Clamp the 1 x 8 pieces to the work surface, and measure the total width (it should be about 15 inches). From the 1 x 4 board, cut two pieces to this measurement. Sand rough edges.

4 Position one 1 x 4 piece 10 inches from the top edges and the other 1 x 4 piece 10 inches from the bottom edges of the 1 x 8 pieces. The ends of the 1 x 4 pieces should be flush with the outer edges of the 1 x 8 pieces. Glue the 1 x 4 pieces in place.

5 Repeat Steps 2–4 to create a second shutter assembly. Allow the glue to set completely.

6 Place the shutter assemblies facedown, and drive 1 1/4-inch screws through the 1 x 8 pieces and into the 1 x 4 pieces. (Use four screws per 1 x 4 piece.)

7 In the 1 x 4 pieces centered 3 inches from each side, drill pilot holes of the appropriate diameter for your wall fastener.

8 Apply at least two coats of stain for even coverage, and let dry. Apply a coat of polyurethane, and allow to dry. Sand lightly, and apply a second coat of polyurethane. Allow to dry before installing.

9 At each pilot hole, align a beveled washer on the shutter back and a finishing washer on the shutter front. Screw from the shutter front through the board and into the siding material with appropriate fasteners for your wall type.
