Built-in Island Bench

Located in the closet's center is a perch for tying shoes or putting on stockings.

Built in Island Bench

The bench's decorative legs have a furniture feel that dresses up the room.

General Instructions

The overall dimensions of this project are 29 inches wide, 18 3/4 inches tall, and 16 inches deep. Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List as a guide and adjusting for fit.

  1. Build the leg/skirt assembly.
    • Cut the (01) front legs to length. We removed the bottom 1 1/2 inches at the indention, and then cut a portion from the square at the top.
    • Cut the (02) back legs to length, measuring up from the bottom.
    • Cut the (03) front skirt, (04) side skirts, and the (05) back skirt, and drill pocket holes into each end.
    • Attach the skirts to the legs using glue and pocket hole screws.
  2. Attach the seat and the railing.
    • Cut the (06) seat from the laminated panel.
    • Use a router with a cove and bead bit to apply a decorative edge to the front and sides of the (06) seat.
    • Using glue and nails, attach the (06) seat to the leg/skirt assembly, overhanging the front and sides by 3/4 inch.
    • Cut the (07) side railings to length.
    • Lay out a 5/8-inch radius on one end.
    • Clamp the two (07) side railings together. Cut and sand the radius while the two pieces are clamped together so that they will match.
    • Miter cut the other ends of the (07) side railings.
    • Attach one (07) side railing to the (06) seat using glue and nails.
    • Miter cut the ends of the (08) back railing, and attach it to the (06) seat using glue and nails.
    • Attach the other (07) side railing to the (06) seat using glue and nails.
  3. Attach the four assemblies using glue and 1 3 Ú8-inch brads. Check for square.
  4. Apply a finish.
    • Fill all nail holes. Sand, prime, and paint as desired.
