Garden Hideaway

Reclaimed space under a deck gives this gardener and her expanding family room to grow.

Potting Shed

An expectant mom desired an outdoor space to share with family and friends, but her tiny fenced-in backyard was crowded with gardening gear. The dirt den under her deck was transformed into a potting shed with a few bright ideas. Lattice walls enclose the new shed but allow natural light and fresh air in. A professional landscaper excavated and terraced the backyard to prevent erosion; wall blocks around the base stabilize the soil and complement the cottage feel of the lattice. Now, the backyard is filled with her favorite plants, plenty of workspaces for gardening, and a spot for entertaining.

This custom-made workbench with a metal top is mobile and multifunctional. Click here to find a list of materials and detailed instructions for building this project.

The pyramid trellis with a red stain anchors the garden design and helps climbing plants with vertical growth.

Cottage Style

1. A lightweight yet durable dining set fits neatly in the corner of the backyard. An umbrella and outdoor pillows pop with color, and a weather-resistant rug defines the area. A curved path connects the spaces together.

2. Four-cobble pavers are secured with jointing sand to provide a permeable surface.

3. This two-burner gas grill features large side shelves and 375 square inches of cooking surface.

4. A simple arbor marries the potting shed with the deck. The window and screen-door trim were stained a cottage blue for a touch of whimsy.

Savvy Storage

1. To fit the space, two five-tier shelving units were reconfigured to create two shorter units. (The extra shelves were used elsewhere by the homeowner.) Various bins made from plastic, galvanized metal, and canvas provide storage for garden goods. A convertible garden bench/kneeler comes in handy when working in the yard.

2. A tool hanger attaches easily to the lattice and helps the gardener keep everything in its place.
