Hello Paradıse

A cool Caribbean tiki hut offers a great (and travel-free) escape for this couple

.Hello Paradise

Laid-back lifestyle and balmy breezes. There’s nothing quite like a tropical vacation. But rather than splurging on airfare and hotel costs, these homeowners decided to make a lasting investment: a makeover for their outdoor room, complete with an authentic tiki bar. “For years, we’ve wanted to update our plain patio so that we could enjoy being out by the pool more. And this was a great way to treat ourselves without blowing our budget on a single trip.”

To capture the island-inspired vibe the couple craved, the tiki hut was constructed with simple, natural materials. The bar area is paired with a covered patio for easy grilling and alfresco dining. Now, the next tropical vacation is as close as the back door.

“Who needs a vacation when we have our own tropical retreat.”

Planters are painted with bright stripes. Filling the larger containers with sand topped with stones keeps tiki torches in place.

“This summer, we plan to chill out and relax right here at home.”

See how-to instructions below to make this ring toss game using mason line and hardware.

Island Living

1. An outdoor table and comfortable chairs transform the blank patio into a cozy spot for dining and entertaining. A weather-resistant pendant light (with included chain) brightens the space. The homeowners applied black spray paint to the copper-finish pendant.

2. A roof constructed from wood beams and galvanized metal roofing provides ample shade for the dining area and at the bar. For a nautical, island-style vibe, rope was wrapped around the posts and attached with construction adhesive. The ends of the rope were secured with nails.

3. Black hanging lanterns that coordinate with the dining-area fixture are suspended with #10 decorative chain. PVC pipe, wrapped with rope in the same manner as the posts, conceals the chains and helps support the lanterns.

If a decked-out hut isn’t currently in your budget, start with a small tiki bar you can build yourself. Find instructions at LowesCreativeIdeas.com/Woodworkers.

Tropical Cooking

1. The stainless steel grill has a generous capacity that’s perfect for serving a crowd during pool parties. The infrared cooking system ensures even cooking without flare-ups.

2. The couple splurged on an under-counter outdoor-rated refrigerator. Now there’s no need to go inside for drinks.

3. Mosaic backsplash tiles pop against the countertop’s 3-inch cream-colored porcelain tiles. Both tiles hit a rustic note with their natural texture.

4. A convenient pullout container makes it easy to separate recyclables from trash.

5. The countertops pull double duty: The 36-inch height is ideal for food and beverage prep, while the 42-inch bar height gives guests a spot to perch with a tropical drink. A stainless steel sink and a high-arc faucet make cleanup a snap. Two stain colors, mahogany and brown, were used for the cabinets to enhance the natural palette and textures.

Cutlery Tray

Step 1: Apply primer to a cutlery tray, and paint as desired. Allow each coat to dry.

Step 2: Using a plastic-cutting tool, cut an 18- x 24-inch acrylic sheet into one piece measuring 11 3/4 x 5 inches and a second piece measuring 8 3/4 x 3 inches.

Step 3: Align the long edge of the larger acrylic piece with the lower edge of the cutlery tray. Attach it with silicone sealant, and allow to dry.

Step 4: Align the long edge of the smaller acrylic piece with the lower edge of the upper compartments, and attach with silicone sealant.

Step 5: Attach two picture hangers on the back top edge of the cutlery tray.

Ring Toss Game

Step 1: In the center of an oak oval rosette, predrill for a 3-inch round screw hook. Predrill countersunk holes for 3-inch screws near both the top and bottom edges of the rosette. Apply polyurethane; let dry.

Step 2: Select a spot on the post 5 feet from the ground, and attach the rosette using 3-inch screws. Attach the 3-inch round screw hook in the center of the rosette.

Step 3: Select a spot on a ceiling/roof joist, 3 to 5 feet away from the post. Predrill a hole in the joist for a 1 5∕8-inch large screw eye.

Step 4: Pry open the end of the large screw eye using pliers, and join one loop of a swivel eye snap to the screw eye. Close the opening with pliers.

Step 5: Tie one end of a 10-foot length of mason line to the other loop of the swivel eye snap. Attach the screw eye (with swivel eye snap and mason line) to the ceiling/roof joist.

Step 6: Test the length of the mason line by stretching it from the swivel eye snap in the joist to the hook in the rosette. Cut the mason line approximately 6 inches longer than this length.

Step 7: Tie a 2-inch welded ring to the mason line, and retest the length. Retie as needed to allow the ring to easily slip onto the hook in the rosette.

The mason line hangs from a roof joist with a screw eye and a swivel eye snap.

To play, step back and try to swing the ring onto the rosette hook.
