Jewelry Screen

Create a decorative organizer for your favorite accessories.

August’s Unwind & Design project-party idea shows you how a few simple materials, such as galvanized hardware cloth from the lumber department and casing from the millwork department, can be used to create a unique frame for jewelry. Get a group of friends together for this month’s project, and make extras to give as gifts!

STEP-BY-STEP
  1. wood glue stillDetermine the desired size of your frame (ours is 18 x 18 inches). Measure and mark the casing to those dimensions. Using a handsaw with miter box, cut four pieces of casing at 45-degree angles to form a frame. Apply wood glue to the end of each piece, and attach the pieces together.
  2. strap clamp stillUse a strap clamp to tighten and hold the frame in place. Allow glue to dry.
  3. wood filler stillFill gaps with wood filler, and allow to dry. Sand smooth any rough edges. Spray-paint the frame with one or two coats, allowing each coat to dry. Tip: Use a blow dryer to speed up the drying process.
  4. cutting hardware cloth stillWearing gloves, measure and cut a piece of galvanized hardware cloth with wire cutters (our piece is 17 x 17 inches).
  5. hammering stillAttach the hardware cloth to the back of the frame using a hammer and aluminum tacks. Cut a piece of transparent duct tape to fit each side of the frame, and place it over the edges of the hardware cloth.
  6. secure the frame to the wallSecure the frame to the wall using appropriate fasteners for your wall type. Use S-hooks, found in the hardware department, to hang jewelry.
Good To Know

You’ll need to add an extra layer of hardware cloth to hold stud earrings in place.
