Ladder Ball

Take it to the beach this summer, or keep everyone busy in the backyard during a party or barbecue.

Ladder Ball

The whole family will love this game. To play, first assign point values to each rung and determine a winning number of points. Stand at a marked distance from the ladder, and toss a bolo to wrap around a rung.

Instructions:

General: Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List and Cutting Diagram as guides and adjusting for fit.

1 Assemble the ladder frame.

a. Temporarily join the (01) stiles together with tape. Predrill centered holes for the screws in the (01) stiles at 1 1/2 inches, 14 1/4 inches, and 27 inches from one end as shown in Figure 1.

b. Predrill centered holes in each end of the (02) rungs.

c. Test-fit the (02) rungs by attaching them to the (01) stiles using screws, and adjust as necessary. (See Figure 2.)

d. Remove the screws and (02) rungs, and wrap each (02) rung with electrical tape.

e. Reattach the (02) rungs using glue and screws.

2 Attach the rails and blocks.

a. Position the (03) cross rail flush with the ends and outer edges of the (01) stiles, and attach using glue and screws. (See Figure 3.)

b. Position one end of each (04) block 1 1/4 inches from each end of the (05) side rails as shown in Figure 4. Attach using glue and screws.

c. Position the side rail assemblies flush with the bottom of the ladder assembly and centered as shown in Figure 5. Attach using glue and screws.

3 Create the bolos.

a. Cut six 24-inch-long pieces of nylon rope.

b. Drill a 1/4-inch hole centered on the end of the 1-inch PVC cap.

c. Insert one end of the rope through the hole in the cap. Tie a knot in one end of the rope, and pull the cap flush with the knot. Tie another knot in the rope flush with the rounded end of the cap.

d. Repeat Steps 3b–c for the other end of the rope with the rounded ends of the caps facing each other. Adjust the rope so that there is approximately 16 inches between each cap. Trim the excess rope.

e. Wrap electrical tape around each cap leaving the end of the rounded end uncovered.

f. Create remaining bolos, and cover each group with a different color.

4 Add finishing touches.

a. Sand all rough edges, and apply a coat of polyurethane.

We call this "South Dakota Nunchuk Golf". We played it first in Sioux Falls, SD in 2003 and it didn't really have a name. So we named it when we built a set from PVC pipe and golf balls. Several friends and family have copied our set.
