Lemonade Stand

All the kids in the neighborhood will love this classic, portable project, and it’s a great way to teach them the value of a dollar. The stand’s front panel is finished with chalkboard paint so the little ones can write and erase messages if their prices or merchandise changes.

General Instructions

Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List and Cutting Diagram as guides and adjusting for fit.

Step-by-Step
  1. Build the base assembly.
    • Using glue and pocket hole screws, attach the (01) frame rails to the (02) frame stiles as shown in Figure 1.
    • Using glue and pocket hole screws, attach one (03) side flush with the edges, top, and bottom of the face frame assembly (see Figure 2).
    • Using glue and 4d nails, attach the (04) floor to the assembly so that it’s flush with the top edge of the lower (01) frame rail.
    • Attach the remaining (03) side to the assembly using glue and pocket hole screws.
    • Using glue and 4d nails, attach the (05) front to the (03) sides. It should be flush with the top and bottom of the (03) sides and covering the front edges.
    • Using glue and 4d nails, attach the (06) top so that it’s flush with the back edge of the face frame assembly and flush with the top edges of the (03) sides.
  2. Add the handles, legs, and wheels.
Note: Refer to “Skill Set” for tips on drilling holes for dowels.
    • To locate the dowel holes on the ends of the (07) handles, use a combination square and draw 45-degree lines from each corner (see the end hole locations detail in Figure 3). The lines intersect at the center of the hole for the dowels and at the center of the arcs for the rounded ends.
    • On the (07) handles, mark the placement of the canopy arm pivot holes, which should be 16 3/8 inches down from the center of the top 1 1/4-inch hole.
    • For each (07) handle, round over the top end, and drill the 1 1/4-inch hole at the top. Drill a 1/2-inch hole at the bottom for the wheel axle. Then drill the 3/4-inch hole for the canopy arm pivot dowel.
    • Attach the (07) handles to the sides of the base assembly with glue and 4d nails as shown in Figure 3. They should be flush with the (05) front and extend 1 5/8 inches below the base assembly.
    • Attach the (08) legs to the sides of the base assembly with glue and 4d nails. They should be flush with the face frame assembly and the lower edge of the (06) top.
    • Insert the 1/2-inch steel rod through the bottom holes in the (07) handles; slip on the wheels, and allow enough room for the axle cap nuts. Mark the steel rod, and cut it to length using a hacksaw. Reassemble the rod and wheels, and then drive on the axle cap nuts.
    Skill Set: Avoiding Tear-out

Lemonade StandDrilling large holes can sometimes lead to tear-out or “blowout” when the bit tip exits the wood. Here are a couple of options to avoid this.

Lemonade StandOption 1: Place the project part on a piece of scrap wood, and clamp in place. Drill through the project part and into the scrap. This will lessen the likelihood of the wood fibers ripping because the bit is still traveling through wood.

Option 2: Drill the hole halfway through on one side of the project part. Flip it over, and then drill through the other side. When doing this, be sure to mark both sides of the project part before drilling.

  3. Construct the canopy.
    • Mark the locations of the dowel holes on the (09) canopy arms as you did in Step 2a, following the end hole locations detail in Figure 3.
    • Round over the ends, and drill a 1 1/4-inch hole in one end and a 3/4-inch hole in the other end of each of the four (09) canopy arms.
    • Cut two pieces of 3/4-inch dowel to a length of 3 1/4 inches.
    • Position a (09) canopy arm on each side of one of the (07) handles with the 3/4-inch holes aligned as shown in Figure 4. Insert the 3/4-inch dowel through the holes so that it protrudes 1/2 inch on each side.
    • Drill 1/8-inch pilot holes through the sides of the protruding ends of the dowels, and drive 1-inch pan-head screws through these holes to lock the dowels in place while still allowing the arms to pivot freely.
    • Repeat Steps d–e for the other side.
    • Insert a 1 1/4-inch dowel into the top of each (09) canopy arm and into the top of each (07) handle as shown in Figure 4.
    • Drill 1/16-inch holes through the (09) canopy arms and the (07) handles and into the 1 1/4-inch dowels (see Figure 4). Lock the dowels in place by driving in 4d nails.
    • To create the canopy, measure and cut the canvas drop cloth to 28 x 32 inches; if desired, paint stripes on the canvas.
    • Attach the drop cloth to the 1 1/4-inch dowels using self-adhesive self-fastening strips.
  4. Apply finishing touches.
    • Fill all nail holes, sand, and prime.
    • Paint the stand with exterior paint; chalkboard paint can be used on the (05) front to easily write and erase messages.
