Mosaic Tile Trivets

These trivets not only protect your table, they add a little visual spice to your party.

Mosaic Tile Trivets

Step 1: Cut the plywood sheet into four squares, or ask a Lowe’s employee to cut it for you.

Step 2: For each trivet, cut one of the 3/8-inch dowels into two 12-inch-long pieces, and cut the other 3/8-inch dowel into two 11-inch-long pieces. Using wood glue, attach the 12-inch lengths and 11-inch lengths to the sides of each plywood piece. Allow to dry.

Step 3: In a plastic bag, mix the white grout per the manufacturer’s instructions. Let the mixture stand for 5 to 10 minutes. While the grout is curing, proceed with Steps 4 and 5.

Step 4: Wearing gloves, place the wall tiles and tile liners in a plastic bag and use a hammer to break the tiles into pieces. Note: Larger pieces will be easier to work with.

Step 5: Arrange the broken tile pieces on each plywood piece, leaving space for grout between the pieces. Using a hot-glue gun, attach the pieces to the plywood, and allow to dry.

Step 6: Cut a corner of the plastic bag. Squeeze the grout over the tile pieces. Smooth out the grout using a paint stirrer as a trowel. Allow the grout to set between the tiles per the manufacturer’s directions, and then wipe away the excess grout from the surface using a damp cloth.

Step 7: From the 1-inch dowel, cut four pieces to the desired height of the trivets. Using a hot-glue gun, attach the pieces to the undersides of the trivets at each corner.

Step 8: Paint the exposed wood, being careful to not get paint on the tiles. Allow to dry.
