Pave Your Own Way

For a pathway with cottage charm, try your hand at crafting these cobblestone pavers.

Pave Your Own WayWith just one mold you easily can create curves, right angles, or even circles. And each section interlocks so that you can design a pathway or patio to suit your space. With only a few simple tools and some basic materials, you’ll have impressive results in no time.

Step-by-Step
  1. Use a garden hose to define the path’s shape. Mark the outline using spray paint, and prepare a level foundation for the path by removing at least 1 inch of topsoil with a straight-blade spade—you may need to remove more depending on the change in grade.
  2. Mix concrete in a wheelbarrow according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For your protection, wear work gloves, safety goggles, and a dust mask. Add liquid cement color to the concrete mix for a decorative touch, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Pave Your Own WaySet the stone mold in place, and use a round-point shovel to fill each cavity with concrete until it’s level with the top of the form. To speed the process, try using more than one mold.
  4. Pave Your Own Way

Smooth the concrete surface with a masonry trowel. Wait a few minutes, and then remove the mold. Dip the trowel in water, and use it to smooth the stones’ edges. Rinse off the mold with water.
  5. For subsequent sections, butt the mold next to the completed paving stone, and repeat the process until your pathway is complete. For a more random pattern, you can rotate the mold a one-quarter turn to interlock the pavers. See the packaging for directions to create curves and corners.
  6. After the walkway sets, brush sand into the stones’ joints with a push broom. Mist lightly using a garden hose with a spray nozzle, and repeat until all cracks are filled.

You may want to correct the written directions against the photos for this project. You have pictures of the door hanger and written directions on decorating a lamp shade.
