Make It

Step 1: Use a handsaw to cut the plywood in half, and then cut one of the halves into two squares. Set the squares aside. Cut the remaining half into four 6- x 12-inch rectangles. (You can ask a Lowe’s employee in the lumber department to cut these pieces for you.) Lightly sand each board.

Step 2: Prime and paint the boards, allowing each coat to dry. Use a pencil to sketch a flower design on the boards, and then fill in with accent paint colors using a small brush.

Step 3: To personalize a board with a name, select a font on your computer (we used Times New Roman), and enlarge to 200-point size. Print the letters, and arrange as desired on the board. Attach the letters to a piece of tracing paper, (or cut out the outlines of the letters), and trace each letter onto the board. Use a small brush to apply your desired paint color, and allow to dry.

Step 4: On each board, measure and mark two holes equally spaced and 3/4 inch from the top edge. Use a drill/driver and a 9/64-inch bit to drill a hole at each marked spot.

Step 5: Following the manufacturer’s instructions, install the brackets and drapery pole on the wall. To hang the boards from the rod, thread mason line through the drilled holes, tying the ends of the line in a knot to secure around the rod.

Good To Know: You can create the flower designs shown here by tracing a circular object, such as a soup can, and then a smaller object, such as a quarter, inside the larger circle.
