Platform Bed

Create a bedtime oasis with this sleek project including sliding end tables.

 Platform Bed

Instructions:

General: Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List and Cutting Diagram as guides and adjusting for fit.

1 Build the base assembly.

a. Cut out the (01) sides, the (02) center braces, and the (03) center support per the layouts in Figure 1.

b. Assemble the base assembly parts, including the (04) foot board, (05) head board, and (06) corner braces, as shown in Figure 2. Attach the parts using glue and pocket hole screws.

2 Build the end table assembly.

a. Using glue, attach the faces of the (07) table supports together.

b. Scribe and miter cut the (08) long support nosing pieces, and attach using glue and finishing nails (see Figure 3).

c. Repeat Step 2b for the (09) short support nosing pieces.

d. Position the (10) table back between the (11) table sides with the top edges flush as shown in Figure 3. Attach the parts using glue and finishing nails.

e. Position the (12) table top flush with the top edges of the (11) table sides and the (10) table back. Attach the (12) table top using glue and finishing nails.

f. Attach the (13) table nosing piece to the front of the (12) table top using glue and finishing nails.

g. Repeat Steps 2d-f for the remaining end table assembly.

h. Using 2 1/2-inch screws, attach the end table assemblies to the table support assembly as shown in Figure 3. Countersink the screws so that they are flush with the assembly.

3 Build the platform assembly.

a. Cut the biscuit slots along the (14) platform edges that will face each other as shown in Figure 4.

b. Drill alternating pocket holes on the back of the (14) platform (about 11 pocket holes per part).

c. Apply glue to the edges and in the biscuit slots, and attach the two (14) platforms together using biscuits, glue, and pocket hole screws.

d. Scribe and miter cut one end of each (15) side trim piece. The trim pieces should overhang the upper edge of the platform assembly by 3/4 inch as shown in Figure 4.

e. Position the bottom of the (15) side trim pieces so that they are flush with the bottom of the platform assembly, and attach using glue and finishing nails.

f. Scribe and miter cut both ends of the (16) foot trim. Position and attach in the same manner as the (15) side trim pieces.

g. Position the top edge of the (17) head trim piece so that it’s flush with the top edges and between the (15) side trim pieces, and attach using glue and finishing nails.

4 Apply finishing touches.

a. Fill all nail holes, sand, and apply stain to the assemblies wearing gloves. After the stain dries, apply multiple coats of polyurethane.

b. Predrill holes, and then attach nail-on furniture glides to the underside of the base assembly at the corners and the center.

c. Position the end table assembly on the base assembly as shown in Figure 5.

d. Position the platform assembly on the base assembly centered side to side. Attach it to the base assembly by driving 2 1/2-inch screws through the (17) head trim into the base assembly.

Cheri,
Thanks for reading! You can definitely make this bed in twin size. You'll just need to compare the size of your twin mattress with the dimensions of the king-size mattress. Then go through the parts list and diagrams, subtracting the length of the pieces as needed to accommodate the new dimensions.
Good luck with the project!
