Putting Green

Introduce kids to golf and improve your short game with this quick and easy project.

Make It

Step 1: Mark off a level 8- x 8-foot square area. Remove approximately 1 1/2 inches of soil, and compress using a tamper.

Step 2: To create the putting-green cup, place a 4-inch atrium grate in a 3- x 4-inch S&D adapter, and place this assembly inside a 4-inch S&D bushing. (These can be found in the plumbing department.)

Step 3: Select a location for the cup assembly, and dig a hole with a posthole digger. Test-fit the cup assembly, and adjust as needed. Fill any gaps around the cup assembly with sand or paver base.

Step 4: Apply and level out paver base and/or sand in the remaining 8- x 8-foot area. Tip: Use a 2 x 4 to level the area. Tamp down with a tamper.

Step 5: Cut the turf to fit the prepared area. Test-fit and trim as necessary. Cut an opening for the cup assembly. Secure the turf by hammering in landscape fabric pins, spaced approximately 2 inches from the edges of the turf.

Step 6: Cut 2 x 4s to fit the perimeter of the putting green area. Using pocket hole screws, attach the 2 x 4s together at the ends to create a frame. Place the 2 x 4 frame on top of the turf, making sure to cover the pins. Do not secure the 2 x 4s to the ground. To create the flagpole, cut a 1/2-inch-diameter PVC pipe to 3 feet, and wrap the pole with electrical tape. Cut a flag from a drop cloth, paint as desired, and spray with a clear topcoat, allowing each coat to dry. Use Liquid Nails to attach the flag to the PVC pole. Use Liquid Nails to attach a 3/4-inch bushing piece (found in the plumbing department) to the inside of the atrium grate. Place the flagpole inside the bushing.

Good To Know:

Test the putting green by rolling a golf ball in various spots across the turf. Tamp down any rough areas as needed.
