Red, White and Blooms

The Stars and Stripes have long been a staple of summer celebrations. This year, consider enhancing your flag display with a vivid salute from nature. Using a fence as a canvas, we created a beautiful focal point for homeowners and guests to enjoy.

You can achieve a similar look by posting a flagpole on a wall or fence and then arranging wire-framed window boxes around it. You also might place your flag near your front door and plant blooms in pots or hanging baskets.

For our display we painted the planters a cheerful red after removing the liners. To add height, we planted dusty miller in the center. Create contrasting colors by mixing bright white bacopa with ‘May Night’ salvia or ‘Grace Ward’ lithodora. Purple fountain grass and red or white begonias can achieve a similar look. Update your planters with new flowers as the seasons change.

  • Small bacopa blooms are perfect for trailing over the edges of a container.
  • Dusty miller reaches up to 24 inches at full maturity and can add height and texture to any arrangement.
