Room and Board

Room and BoardAdd style and function to your guestroom with this shelf, featured in the November/December 2004 issue of Lowe's Creative Ideas. We've included a list of tools and supplies as well as complete instructions to make this simple project a breeze to complete.

Instructions

General: Set all nails; fill nail holes with wood filler, and sand smooth when dry. Remove excess glue from exposed surfaces.

Step 1: Cut all lumber per cut list.

Step 2: With a jigsaw, cut a 23 1/4- x 47-inch opening in the plywood frame, using the dimensions shown in the illustration for placement. Sand the inside edges smooth. Place the frame face down on a work surface, and then place the lattice panel over the opening. Align the lattice so that about 3/8- to 1/2-inch overhangs the opening. Attach the lattice panel to the frame with 3/4-inch wire brads.

Step 3: Arrange the two supports on the back of the frame, 1 3/4 inches in from the sides and with 19 3/4 inches of each support exposed to serve as the legs of the headboard (see illustration). Attach the supports with 2-inch screws.

Step 4: Place the trim pieces along the edges of the frame opening as shown in the (illustration). Attach the trim pieces using 1 1/4-inch finishing nails.

Step 5: Attach the veneer to the exposed edges of the plywood along the sides and top of the assembly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for applying the veneer.

Step 6: Sand all flat surfaces smooth, and wipe them clean. Prime and paint the entire assembly. Allow drying time between coats.

Step 7: Attach the headboard to the wall or bed frame with the appropriate fasteners.
