Southwestern Table and Benches

To give the party that authentic Southwestern flair, you can build these table and chairs.

Southwestern Table Benches

Instructions:

General: Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List and Cutting Diagram as guides and adjusting for fit.

1 Build the table leg assemblies.

a. Using the layout in Figure 1, cut the (01) brackets to shape.

b. Use a dremel with a 1/4-inch cutter tip to carve out a border around the block in the center of the (01) brackets.

c. Using glue and pocket hole screws, attach the (01) brackets to the (02) table legs as shown in Figure 1.

2 Build the table side assemblies.

a. Using glue and pocket hole screws, assemble two side assemblies with the table leg assemblies and (03) short aprons as shown in Figure 2.

b. Using 1 1/4-inch screws, attach the (03) short aprons to the (01) brackets.

3 Assemble the table body.

a. Using glue and pocket hole screws, assemble the table body with the (04) long aprons and side assemblies as shown in Figure 3. Using 1 1/4-inch screws, attach the (04) long aprons to the (01) brackets.

b. Using glue and pocket hole screws, attach the (05) stretchers as shown in Figure 4. Note: Evenly space the (05) stretchers, and use two screws at each end.

c. Evenly space and attach the (06) top slats to the (05) stretchers, (02) table legs, (03) short aprons, and (04) long aprons as shown in Figure 5. The (06) top slats should be flush with the two ends.

d. Using glue and 1 1/4-inch screws, miter cut and attach the (07) long top trim and (08) short top trim as shown in Figure 6.

4 Add finishing touches to the table.

a. Following the layout in Figure 7, mark the design centered on the tabletop.

b. Use a dremel with a 1/4-inch cutter tip to carve out a border around the outer edge of the design and the center block.

c. Sand, apply stain and paint as shown, and allow to dry.

d. Apply a coat of spar varnish, and allow to dry. Sand lightly, and apply a second coat.

e. Predrill and attach nail-on furniture glides to the bottom of the (02) table legs.

5 Build the side assemblies for each bench.

a. Using glue and pocket hole screws, assemble two side assemblies with the (09) bench legs and (10) short rails as shown in Figure 8. Position the (10) short rails 1/4 inch from the front face of the (09) bench legs.

6 Assemble each bench body.

a. Using glue and pocket hole screws, assemble the bench body with the (11) long rails and side assemblies as shown in Figure 9. Position the (11) long rails 1/4 inch from the front face of the (09) bench legs.

b. Using glue and pocket hole screws, attach the (12) cross braces as shown in Figure 10. Note: Evenly space the (12) cross braces, and use two screws at each end.

c. Evenly space and attach the (13) seat slats to the (12) cross braces, (09) bench legs, (10) short rails, and (11) long rails as shown in Figure 11. The (13) seat slats should extend 1/2 inch over the two ends.

7 Add finishing touches to the benches.

a. Sand, apply stain and paint as shown, and allow to dry.

b. Apply a coat of polyurethane, and allow to dry. Sand lightly, and apply a second coat.

c. Predrill and attach nail-on furniture glides to the bottom of the (09) bench legs.
