Store and Stack Wine Rack

Chablis meets PVC with this vertical wine rack. Galvanized side panels make it magnet-friendly, give it a high-tech, hip feel and ensure that it fits in as an attractive part of any kitchen redesign or remodel.

Step 1 - Cut the Case Pieces

Using the Materials List and Cutting Diagram, cut the sides (A); top, bottom and shelf (B) and back (C) from 3/4-inch medium density fiberboard (MDF) to the sizes listed. Set the pieces aside.

Good to Know: To make your trip from Lowe's to home easier, a Lowe's associate will cut your MDF panel to size with a panel saw. This saw station is generally located near the sheet goods (plywood) in the lumber department. The first two cuts are free; additional cuts are 25 cents each. Some locations now sell 4x8-foot MDF as a slightly oversized 49" x 97" panel.

Set up your dado blade to cut 3/4-inches wide and 1/4-inch deep. Now, cut the rabbets and dadoes into the sides (A).

Step 2 - Assemble the Frame

Good to Know: If you don't already own assembly clamps similar in purpose to the right-angle clamp jig shown, take a few minutes to make at least two or more pairs from 3/4-inch plywood scrap. They will make your joinery more accurate and quicker to assemble.

To assemble the first joint, glue, clamp, and nail a side (A) and shelf (B), making sure that the parts are flush at the front of the assembly. Add the other two shelves (B), then the second side (A). Then, add the back (C) to square the assembly.

With a damp cloth, remove glue squeeze-out.

Step 3 - Apply Paint

Fill nail holes and any other voids in the rack with painter's putty. If necessary, make edges flush with 120-grit sandpaper. Apply a coat of primer to the inside and outside of the rack and the best side of the molding. Before applying a topcoat, sand lightly with 120-grit sandpaper and remove dust with a tack cloth. Then apply a finish coat as recommended to the inside and outside of the rack and to the trim.

Step 4 - Add Trim and Wine Tubes

Depending on where you'll place your completed project, you may want to put the metal and trim on the left side of the rack as shown, or on the right. Of course, with another piece of metal and more molding, you could trim out both sides.

Cut the vertical trim (D) and horizontal trim (E) to the lengths specified in the Materials List and in the Exploded View. We cut our trim at the table saw.

Using #18x3/4-inch wire nails, nail the galvanized panning and trim to the rack. Fill the nail holes with painter's putty, and touch up the paint.

Now, cut the PVC pipe to 11-1/2 inches long. For a clean cut, we cut our tubes at the band saw using the jig shown above. If desired, you can use sandpaper to smooth the cut end of the pipe that will be visible.

Insert the tubes into the wine rack.
