Child’s Easel
Give the little ones a place for them to hone their artistic talents.
Instructions:
General: Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List and Cutting Diagram as guides and adjusting for fit.
1 Build the side assemblies.
a. Following the side layout in Figure 1, build two side assemblies with the (01) legs and the (02) rails using glue and pocket hole screws. Note: Allow 1/2 inch between the edge of the (02) rail and the edge of the pocket hole screw for a 3/8-inch rabbet.
b. Using a router fitted with a 3/8-inch rabbeting bit, cut a 3/8-inch rabbet on the back of one side assembly.
2 Assemble the chalkboard side assembly.
a. Following the cap and holder layout in Figure 2, cut two (03) caps and two (04) holders. The (03) caps are the same dimensions as the (04) holders without the slots.
b. Position the (03) caps flush with the top and outside edges of the (01) legs as shown in Figure 3. Attach using glue and nails.
c. Position the (04) holders flush with the edges of the (03) caps, and attach using glue and nails.
d. Cut the (05) tray front and the (06) tray bottom to length matching the width of the side assembly.
e. Cut a 15-degree bevel along one long edge of the (06) tray bottom. Cut a 15-degree bevel on one end of the (07) tray sides.
f. Position the (05) tray front flush with the lower edges of the (06) tray bottom, and attach using glue and nails.
g. Attach the (07) tray sides to the (05) tray front with the top edges flush. There will be a 1/8-inch gap between the (07) tray sides and the (06) tray bottom.
h. Position the lower edge of the (06) tray bottom flush with the lower edge of the lower (02) rail as shown in Figure 3, and attach using glue and nails.
i. Test-fit the (08) chalkboard, and then apply several coats of chalkboard paint. Set aside for final assembly.
3 Build the drawing-board side assembly.
a. Repeat Steps 2d-h to create a second tray assembly, and attach it to the drawing-board side assembly.
b. Using glue and nails, attach the (09) drawing board to the assembly as shown in Figure 4.
c. Scribe and cut to length the aluminum flat bar, and sand a bevel on one long edge.
d. Using truss washer lath screws and washers spaced 1/2 inch from each end of the side assembly and 2 inches above the tray assembly, attach the flat bar with the bevel edge adjacent to the face of the (09) drawing board.
4. Apply finishing touches.
a. Temporarily remove the flat bar, fill all holes, sand, stain, and apply a coat of polyurethane to the assembly.
b. Attach the (08) chalkboard to the chalkboard side assembly using glue and wire brads.
c. Cut to length a continuous hinge, and attach the two side assemblies together at the top edges using the hinge.
d. Attach screw eyes to each (01) leg 1/2 inch from the outside edges and 20 inches from the bottom as shown in Figure 4.
e. Cut two 16-inch lengths of chain, and attach to the screw eyes.
f. Insert the (10) dowel into a roll of contractor’s paper, and place in the slots of the (04) holders.
g. Feed the paper behind the flat bar as shown in Figure 5.
