Contemporary Cool Headboard

You can find middle ground between urban and earthy. Rely on clean lines and sustainable materials to proclaim your style.

1. Pick a palette. Warm, natural tones convey a contemporary vibe. Here, a few variations of tan and brown blend in a palette that?s satisfyingly simple. The bamboo headboard continues the earthy theme.

2. Set the mood. Serving as bedside tables and lamps all in one, stand-alone shelves feature silk shades and provide task lighting. General illumination comes from a warehouse-style pendant with an industrial stainless finish.

3. Make it comfy. A chenille and jute woven rug with a tan band fits the palette and provides a solid base. A multi-toned bamboo Roman shade provides privacy and gently diffuses natural light.

Step 1: Cut the sheet of plywood to 54- x 48-inches, or have a Lowe’s employee in the lumber department cut it for you.

Step 2: Place the plywood piece on a flat work surface, and cover the plywood with pieces of the bamboo flooring. Measure, mark, and cut the ends of the flooring pieces as needed to create flush edges.

Step 3: Attach the flooring pieces to the plywood piece with all-purpose construction adhesive, and allow glue to dry.

Step 4: Measure, mark, and miter cut the bamboo quarter-round to cover the top edge and the two side edges of the headboard. Attach with wood glue and wire brads.

Hang your headboard with a cleat.

Step 1: Set a table saw or circular saw blade at 45 degrees, and rip the 1 x 6 to create the wall cleat and headboard cleat.

Step 2: Position the headboard cleat 3 1/2 inches from the top and centered, with the angle cut facing the board and pointed down. Make sure that the cleat is parallel to the top. Attach using glue and 1 1/4-inch screws.

Step 3: Position the 1 x 3 offset board 3 1/2 inches from the bottom andcentered. Make sure that the cleat is parallel to the bottom. Attach using glue and 1 1/4-inch screws.

Step 4: Position the wall cleat 54 inches from the floor, with the angle cut facing the wall and pointed up. Attach to the wall using appropriate fasteners and anchors for your wall type, and check for level.

Step 5: Place the headboard on the wall with the headboard cleat resting on thewall cleat. Adjust as necessary.

Note: If needed, you can adjust the dimensions for different size beds following these guides.

Twin: Cut the sheet of plywood to 39 x 48 inches. For the headboard cleat and offset board, cut the 1 x 6 x 4 to 36 inches and the 1 x 3 x 4 to 36 inches.

Queen: Cut the sheet of plywood to 60 x 48 inches. Use the 1 x 6 x 4 and 1 x 3 x 4 for the headboard cleat and offset board.

King: Cut the sheet of plywood to 76 x 48 inches. Use a 1 x 6 x 6 for the headboard cleat and 1 x 3 x 6 for the offset board.
