How to Use a Drill

This essential tool is easy to operate, and useful in a variety of projects.

Using a Drill

Good to Know: Predrilling with a drill bit before using a screw or nail to join parts together makes the process easier and prevents the wood from splitting.

Step 1: Select the bit.
Choose the appropriate type and size bit for your material and fasteners. For screws, pick a bit that matches the inner diameter of the threaded part, not the diameter of the threads. For nails, use a bit that is slightly smaller in diameter than the shank.

Step 2: Measure and mark.
To create a center point for pre-drilling, measure and mark a short line from one side and a short line from one end of the workpiece. The intersection of these lines marks the center point.

Step 3: Insert the bit.
Place the bit fully seated in the chuck—the part of the drill that holds a bit in place. Tighten the chuck completely, making sure the bit is centered. Turn the drill/driver’s setting to drill (an icon that looks like a drill bit).

Step 4: Drill the hole.
Set the drill direction button to rotate to the right, and grip the drill with your forefinger on the trigger. Align the drill perpendicular to the surface, using a speed square as a guide. Start slowly by gently pulling the trigger, and then squeezing harder to accelerate.
