Secure Your Home for the Holidays

With easy-to-install products and a few simple tips, you can enjoy the season knowing your home and your loved ones are safe.

Secure your home for the Holidays

Ah, the holidays…that happy, hectic time of the year. Between running out for more gift wrap, rounding up the family for the annual Christmas card portrait (will the dog ever sit still?), fixing snacks for the office party, and picking up loved ones at the airport—or hitting the road yourself—who has time to remember to lock the back door? Luckily, a few simple steps can add to your home’s security year-round. And here’s a plus: Many security products not only offer added protection but also can enhance your home for a warm and welcoming look that’s just right all year.

1. Consider a complete system. GE’s new Wireless Home Security Program is simple to install and includes a control center with window/door sensor kit (#191443), garage door sensor (#192138), and indoor/outdoor motion sensor (#192286). The security sign with yard stake and matching window stickers (#185165) sends the message that your home is protected.

2. Monitor special areas. Keep an eye on the nursery, playroom, or basement with a camera and monitor. The GE wireless color camera with portable LCD handheld monitor (#187959) features night vision technology, can be used indoors or out, and sends sound and pictures up to 200 feet.

3. Check doors. The front entrance should not only create a gracious first impression but also provide plenty of security as well. Add extra protection—without sacrificing style—with security storm doors. The Larson Secure Elegance storm door (#56344) is made of tough KeepSafe glass and includes hardware that secures the door in three places.

4. Replace worn locks. Make sure entry doors have deadbolts or the equivalent. Consider innovative keypad locksets or those with SmartKey technology, which lets you reset locks to one key in about 30 seconds—perfect if you’ve just moved, lost your keys, or had your keys stolen. Or go high-tech: With the Schlage LiNK Camelot keypad deadbolt starter kit (#311028), you can monitor access to your home and unlock doors remotely from your computer or cell phone. You can even program the system to send texts or e-mail updates so you’ll always know who’s home.

5. Lighten up. Keep the garage, gates, driveway, and sides of the house well lit. The Portfolio 150-degree motion-activated wall light (#63285) has patented Dual Brite technology (low-level accent and full bright security light options). It turns on when it senses motion up to 30 feet away. Perfect for walkways, the Secure Home 240-degree motion-sensing security light (#126413) detects motion within a 100-foot range.

6. Create a “lived-in” look. Even when you’re away, make sure your house looks like someone is home. Ask a neighbor to pick up newspapers, packages, and mail, and leave a car parked in the driveway (remove the garage-door opener first). Set lamps with timers (Utilitech, #155671) so a few lights will come on inside after dark.
