Indoor Herb Gardens

Fresh herbs can add flavor to any dish. Plant an indoor garden to keep a supply on hand year-round.

Indoor Herb Garden

Contemporary Hanging Planter

For a modern spin, plant your favorite herbs in an aluminum water heater drain pan. It creates an eye-catching display in front of a window.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Spray a 24-inch water heater drain pan (#35163) with black plastic spray coating (#42849). Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure waterproofing. Allow to dry.

2. Cut a piece of edge border (#71734) to the height and circumference of the pan. Line the pan with the edge border.

3. Using a 1/4-inch bit, drill four holes evenly positioned around the top of the pan.

4. Cut four lengths of chain (#51843) to your desired length for hanging. Our chains measure 4 1/2 feet each.

5. Arrange pebbles (#139477) in the bottom of the pan with potting mix on top to create a drainage system. Plant your favorite herbs in the container. We used rosemary, fennel, mint, basil, sage, tarragon, parsley, oregano, and thyme. We also added ornamental peppers for color and contrast.

6. Attach the chains to the pan with 1/8-inch quick links

7. Connect the top rings of all the chains with a 2 1/2-inch Shook (#196591). Anchor an all-purpose hook (#263239) to the ceiling, and hang the completed container near a window that receives plenty of sunlight.

Birdbath Planter

Create a unique garden that’s for everyone (except the birds). A traditional birdbath with the look of weathered stone makes a perfect planter for overwintering herbs and can be placed in any room of your home.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Spread a layer of decorative rock soil cover (#139539) in the bottom of the birdbath (#141165*) to allow for proper drainage. Add a 2-inch layer of potting mix (#93762).

2. Plant your choice of herbs in the birdbath, keeping the taller plants in the middle and shorter and trailing ones on the outside edge. We planted dill, basil, sage, oregano, chives, thyme, and parsley. Cover soil with sheet moss (#251955), and place the arrangement by a sunny window. Water as needed.

*Availability varies by market.

Good To Know
Place herbs where they will receive plenty of sunlight. Most herbs do not require a lot of water—usually once a week, or if the top layer of soil is dry.
