Sparkling Stars

Dress up patriotic celebrations with colorful luminarias.

Star Luminarias

Step 1:

Fill a 1-gallon metal paint can (#60689) with water to about 1 inch below the top. Place it in the freezer overnight.

Step 2:
Sketch a template of your star pattern on a sheet of paper. You can download the template our star design if you like.

Click to download star template.

Step 3:
Take the can out of the freezer, and place it on a work surface. Tape your template to the can, and then lay the can on its side.

Step 4:
Using a hammer and awl (#12363), punch the design into the can. (The ice will probably crack.) When you’ve completed the design, allow the ice to melt, and then pour out the water. Wearing gloves, wipe the can dry, being careful of sharp edges.

Step 5:
Apply spray primer (#282325), and then apply red, white, or blue spray paint to the can, allowing each coat to dry.

Step 6:
Place votive candles in glass candleholders inside the cans.
