Shaker Wall Cabinet

Create a sleek storage unit that adds character to any space.

Shaker Wall Cabinet

The simple, clean lines of Shaker-style furniture inspired this project. It's perfect for use in a bath, kitchen, foyer, or home office - anywhere a small storage cabinet would be handy.

General Instructions

Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List as a guide and adjusting for fit.

Step-by-Step
  1. Build the case.
    • Cut a chamfer on the front and ends of the (01) case top and bottom using a table saw with the blade set at 30 degrees. Leave 3/8 inch of each edge flat (see Figure 1).
    • Drill holes for the shelf pins in the (02) case sides per the shelf pin layout in Figure 1.
    • Drill countersunk holes 3/8-inch deep into the (01) case top and bottom, as shown in Figure 1, using a #10 countersink bit. Attach the (01) case top and bottom to the (02) case sides using glue and 1 5/8-inch screws.
    • Apply glue to the end of a 3/8-inch dowel, and insert the dowel into a countersunk hole. Trim the dowel flush, and sand smooth. Repeat for each countersunk hole.
    • Cut a 1/4-inch-deep rabbet along the interior back perimeter of the case assembly using a router fitted with a 3/8-inch rabbeting bit. Use a chisel to square the rounded portions of the rabbet at each corner.
    • Measure and cut the (03) back panel to fit. Attach the (03) back panel using glue and brads.
    • Position the (04) divider 5 1/4 inches above the top of the (01) case bottom and flush with the front of the (02) case sides. Attach the (04) divider to the (02) case sides in the same manner as described in Step 1c and 1d.
  2. Build the upper and lower doors.
    • Measure the opening where the upper door will be placed. The door's overall dimensions should be 1/8 inch less than the height and 1/8 inch less than the width of the opening. Adjust the dimensions in the Cut List to reflect your exact measurements, and cut the (05) door rails and the (06) door stiles to fit.
    • Attach the (05) door rails to the (06) door stiles using glue and pocket hole screws.
    • In the same manner as described in Step 1e, cut a 1/4-inch-deep rabbet along the interior back perimeter of the door frame assembly. Use a chisel to square the rounded portions of the rabbet at each corner.
    • Measure the inside dimension of the door frame assembly, and cut the (07) door panel to fit. Attach the (07) door panel to the door frame using glue and brads.
    • Secure the door to the right (02) case side with hinges, and install a magnetic catch to the door and at a corresponding position on the left (02) case side./li>
    • Measure the opening for the (08) lower door, and cut it to 1/8 inch less than the height and 1/8 inch less than the width of the opening. Secure the (08) lower door to the (01) case bottom using hinges, and install a magnetic catch on the (08) lower door and at a corresponding position on the (02) case side.
    • Attach a screw eye to the (08) lower door and to the (02) case side. Link a chain between the screw eyes to create a stop and keep the (08) lower door horizontal when open. Use needle-nose pliers to remove excess chain links.
  3. Add the shelf.
    • Cut the (10) shelf so that it measures 3/8 inch less than the width of the inside of the case assembly and 1/4 inch less than the depth of the inside of the case assembly with the door closed.
  4. Apply a finish, and add hanging hardware and knobs.
    • Fill all nail holes, and sand smooth.
    • To fill the grain of the oak, apply a coat of stain, and sand again while wet. This forms a slurry that will fill most of the wood grain.
    • Stain again until the desired hue is reached, and apply a coat of paste wax or polyurethane when dry.
    • Attach two picture hangers to the back of the wall cabinet. Be sure to use appropriate hangers for your wall type that will support the weight of the cabinet and its contents.
    • Install the shelf pins and the (10) shelf.
    • Add wooden knobs to the doors.
